Sustainability and innovation awards for Canberra Airport

15 October 2015

Canberra Airport has taken out two national awards at the Australian Airports Association awards announced in Hobart.

CBR has also been announced as a national finalist in the prestigious Banksia Sustainability Awards for 2015 with the winners to be unveiled on 13 November.

The Airport’s “Here to Help” campaign took out the Innovation and Excellence Award for Customer Experience with the judges noting:

Canberra Airport has been running its customer service program under the banner “Here to Help” for more than three years. Among other features, the initiative incorporates real time interactive customer service features on the website, Australia’s first enclosed, air conditioned taxi lounge, a concourse touch screen information kiosk, bike racks and storage and “Airwaves”, a highly successful six week festival featuring live local music, food and beverages. In the 2014/15 period, new offerings were introduced, including “Find your Car” licence plate recognition software used by car parking officers to assist passengers in finding their car in multi-storey car parks.

The Environmental Management Award was won by Canberra Airport in recognition of its Resource Reduction Program:

For the past five years Canberra Airport has run a tri-generation plant that produces electricity, heating and cooling. The airport was among the first in the world to install the technology and in recent years the two wings of the terminal building were connected allowing them to power each other and export electricity back to the grid. In 2014/15 work continued to refine and build on water and energy resources reduction by introducing an Energy Management Reduction Task Force; comprising mechanical and energy contractors and building management system operators. Daily energy use is monitored across the whole of the airport operation.
